About Us

When we were pregnant with our first baby, we found there was a lack of pregnancy and childbirth info available online for Northland and Far North New Zealand.

After we unexpectedly lost our son during birth in 2012, the drive to ensure accurate info was available to all pregnant Northland familes became even more important.

We worked together with local obstetricians and midwives from Whangarei and Far North to create the handout Am I In Labour? We were all focused on providing consistent information for women labouring and birthing in Northland, to educate parents about the importance of communication in labour particularly when birthing in rural locations. We hope to prevent a loss like ours from happening to other families and are happy that this handout is now in use in Whangarei Hospital, Kawakawa Hospital and Kaitaia Hopsital antenatal classes and Whangarei Parents Centre childbirth education classes.

Northland Birth Stories began thereafter, a community resource to enable mum's and parent's to connect with other parents, to share their birth stories, advice and links to resources for parents throughout Northland & NZ.

Our unique location sees many families living rurally, some families having their first child may not have friends or whanau with young children to share stories and advice, or are not sure what is available around them. Northland Birth Stories aims to bring such families together with parents that have experience to share, to provide a sense of community, support, a glimpse into what to expect when birthing in Northland and an opportunity to share pregnancy and birth related information online.
