MASON'S BIRTH
Pregnancy
Had a healthy prengnacy although had a car accident at 24 weeks pregnant. Was checked out at that time and baby was fine.
I had a independent Whangarei midwife.
Went into labor at 39 weeks 3 days.
FIrst signs of labor
It was the 14th Dec 2013 and I woke at 3 am with contractions. I got up and had a warm shower not wanting to wake my husband as they were half in hour to a hour apart. After having my shower I got back into bed and tried to get some sleep as I knew I would need it. I tossed and turned as the contractions came and went lasting a few seconds. At this stage the contractions felt like a bad period pain but having a child before I knew that this was it.
At 6 am I woke my husband and told him he better ring work to say he wasn't going in as it was all go. I rang my mum and asked her to come down to my house as I was having contractions.
At 7am my husband rang the midwife. I had to have my midwifes back up as my midwife was away. She arrived at 7:30am and did a examanion and told me I was 2 cm dilated and to go and have a warm bath, ring her if I needed to. She told me she would be back at 11:30am to see how I was doing. 11:30 midwife was back and I was still only 2 cm.
Off to Whangrei Hospital Maternity
Time passed contractions were coming and going faster and at 2 pm I felt I really needed some pain relief so me, my husband and my mum headed up to the hospital. I was given the gas whiched helped but felt very nauseous with it. I was very tired and just wanted some rest. I was checked again and still only 2 cm dialated. I was told I was not in active labour. I couldn't belive it I was so tired and in so much pain I couldn't stop crying. I was told they were going to send me home. I thought 'oh my gosh how am I going to do this'. I was offered pethidine which I took as I wanted some relief. The pethidine worked and I got a few hours rest.
Back home, back to hospital
About 5 pm we headed off home and was told to go for a walk to try and get things going. I walked and walked and was in so much pain until 10:30pm. I was now in alot of pain and rang midwife and was told to go in for pain relief. Just before we headed back up I had my show. When we got up there I was given gas and examed again. I was told I was 3 cm dilated and in active larbor she then broke my waters. I then got into the bath with my husband and mum along side me. I used the gas and the warm water was so lovely and really helped with the pain.
At 4 am I was checked and still 3 cm dilated. The midwife told me to get out of the bath and go back to the room as the water may be slowing things down. When getting back to the room I was in so much pain I was crying and asked for a epidural. I got the epidural with in half n hour the pain eased for a while then the pain was horrible the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. I felt something running between my legs and told the nurse as they were trying to sort the epidural out. She lifted the sheets, I was looking at my husband at the time he went white as a ghost. I remember asking what was wrong, I was told I was having a bleed and looks like I will need a c section. A doctor was called and was there with 5 mins while the room filled with people putting stockings on me and wiping nail polish off my in a hurry the doctor entered and didn't say a word lifted the sheets and said c section and was gone.
I was in so much pain at this stage and was told I had to sign form for c section. The epidural still wasn't working. Then nurses and midwife were pushing the bed running though the hospital. Every lift had someone waiting there with It open. At this stage I was so scared and really had no idea what was happening.
My husband was next to me holding my hand. When we got down to theater my husband was told to wait while they get him some scrubs. I was taken into the operating theater waiting area and was then told my husband wasn't couldn't come in as I had to be put to sleep. I couldn't believe it. Thoughts were running though my head, what if my baby dies, what if I die, I didn't get to say good bye to my husband. I was then taken in and asked to move across onto the table I tried to but was in so much pain I needed help. Before I was even asleep they had my gown up and putting stuff on my tummy. When I woke up in the recovery room I couldn't belive the pain was gone and looked at the nurse and asked where my baby was and if he was ok.
Half a hour later I was taken up to the ward and got to see my beautiful little baby which weight only 5 pounds 11 oz he was born at 6:10am on the 15th dec 2013. He was put on me straight away and breastfeed. I was then told later I had a placental abruption and my little boy had the cord around his neck 5 times. He was healthy and alive.

Things you would do differently?
Ask more questions about what's going on. Ask to have any if any more prengnacys monitored more closely eg. Weight of baby was small. Ask for a different opinion if I'm not happy with midwifes decision.
What advice would you recommend to other Northland mums / families?
Probably not a story you want to share with first time mums but it does happen and when you are pregnant you don't get told about the not so good things so if it does happen you have no idea on what's going on. This birth has really affected me and writing this has made me feel a little better. This was about my birth story I didn't put anything in here about the way I was treated by 1 particular midwife. Sorry it's so long.
